The City of Berlin
On the day of German reunification, October 3, 1990 Berlin became an independent city-state like Hamburg and Bremen. Reunited Federal Germany consists of a total of 16 federal states, known as Länder. Berlin is subdivided into 12 administrative districts called Bezirke, which were amalgamated from the earlier 23 administrative units with effect from January 1, 2001. The city is committed to its role as host and partner to the federal government’s institutions and the other Länder, as well as to diplomatic missions, the media, organizations and associations.
Berlin is an exciting city of contrasts and one of the most interesting ones in Europe. Forever evolving, it can be explored in a countless variety of historical and modern attractions.
With over 170 museums and galleries, the city is one of the world's prime locations for first-rate historical art collections, cultural exhibitions as well as museums of science and technology.
Berlin's vibrant cultural scene has a lot to offer. No matter what your preference is, you're guaranteed to find something to suit your taste and interests.
Berlin is the city of contrasts, with room for all tendencies and ways of thinking. Its diversity shows in its districts, from the elegant quarters in West Berlin to the more picturesque areas in the East, a favorite among young people and artists.
